The 9 best Injinji socks for winter

9. Injinji Liner Crew - The smart base layer

Since early 2017, the Injinji Liners have been available in the Benelux. These ultra-thin socks are not thick winter socks per se, but they do form the ideal base layer for winter.

You wear a liner as your first protective layer. This toe sock will wick moisture away from your feet and prevent skin-on-skin contact between the toes, thereby preventing blisters.

The liners are available in two models:

Thanks to the merino wool, you can also wear the merino wool variant as a single layer. Note: we do not recommend wearing this Merino Liner in sturdy hiking boots. This is a thin sock and therefore somewhat less sturdy.

Want to wear a second sock over it for extra warmth? Then immediately choose our number 2 in this overview: the Injinji Liner + Hiker combination.

8. Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show Wool - For doubters

At number 8 we find the Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show Wool. This sock is the ideal sock for the doubters among us.

Why doubt?

  • This ankle model is quite short for winter (although you can easily solve this with long pants that cover the ankles)
  • This sock belongs to the Injinji Lightweight collection, making this toe sock (along with the liners) the thinnest sock in this top 9

But why still in the top 9? The Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show Wool contains merino wool - the finest type of wool that exists. Merino wool is so fine that it doesn't itch. Moreover, it has the property of wicking an enormous amount of moisture from the feet, without feeling clammy.

This means merino wool is able to keep your feet warm in cold conditions, but this sock will also keep your feet fresh in warmer conditions.

Perfect for: Runners who want slightly warmer feet in winter, but want to avoid overheating at all costs.

7. Injinji Trail Midweight Crew - Sturdy trail sock

The name speaks for itself. The Injinji Trail Midweight Crew are high trail socks from the Midweight collection.

Features:

  • Sturdy, thickened heel and bottom for extra strength, protection and comfort
  • Coolmax fibers keep your feet dry and comfortable
  • Retain their strength even after multiple washes
  • Reaches mid-calf
  • Available in unisex or specifically women's model

6. Injinji Ultra Run Crew - With light compression

The Injinji Ultra Run Crew looks somewhat similar to the Trail Series on the outside. However, this sock differs in two important areas:

  • Full terry reinforcement: The Ultra Run Series is thickened (terry) over the entire sole of the foot (heel, arch & toes). In the Trail Series, only the heel and arch are thickened.
  • Light compression: In the Ultra Run Series there is light compression. This doesn't make the sock a true compression sock, but you definitely feel a difference compared to the Trail Series.

The Ultra Run Crew is available in both unisex and women's models.

Perfect for: Ultra runners and those who want extra support during long distances.

5. Injinji Trail Midweight Mini-Crew - Compact trail sock

The Injinji Trail Midweight Mini-Crew is very similar to the Trail Midweight Crew. This toe sock has exactly the same composition and is available in the same colors.

So how does this sock differ?

  • Reaches just above the ankle (instead of mid-calf)
  • The ankle section consists of a double cuff
  • This makes this sock fit extra tightly around your ankle
  • Dirt has much less chance of getting into your socks during your trail run

Because this model is slightly shorter, many runners find the combination with long running tights a bit more comfortable than its taller 'big brother'.

4. Injinji Outdoor Midweight Mini-Crew - Merino for hikers

The Injinji Outdoor Midweight Mini-Crew reaches above the ankle and is popular not only with hikers, but also with trail runners. This toe sock combines:

  • The thickness and strength of the Midweight Series: Sturdy, thickened heel and bottom for extra strength, protection and comfort
  • The excellent insulating capacity of the Wool series

Perfect for: Hikers and trail runners looking for warmth and strength in a more compact model.

3. Injinji Outdoor Midweight Crew - The trekking sock

Going on a (multi-day) trek? Then this high Injinji toe sock really shouldn't be missing.

The Injinji Outdoor Midweight Crew is a versatile merino wool hiking sock that is suitable for both high and low hiking boots. The high version (up to mid-calf) offers extra protection and warmth during long hikes.

Perfect for: Multi-day treks, winter hikes and anyone looking for maximum warmth and comfort.

2. Injinji Liner + Hiker - The smart combination

The Liner + Hiker combination was the biggest innovation at Injinji in 2017. After the Injinji Liners came on the market at the beginning of that year, they created the ideal sock to wear over this liner.

What makes this combination so special?

The Liner + Hiker combination consists of two layers:

  • Coolmax Liner (inner layer) - a toe sock that wicks away moisture and prevents blisters
  • Wool outer sock (outer layer) - with merino wool for warmth

The outer sock is not a toe sock (so no separate toes) but has been anatomically shaped for a perfect fit.

The advantage of this system:

  • The liner prevents blisters by avoiding skin-on-skin contact
  • The outer sock provides warmth and extra protection
  • You can adjust the layers to the temperature
  • Perfect for standing still for long periods in the cold
  • The Injinji Liner+Hiker combination comes in a men's model and a women's model

1. Injinji Snow - The warmest toe sock

The number 1 in this top 9 is the Injinji Snow. This high Injinji knee sock with merino wool was specially made to be worn in winter conditions.

Features:

  • Reaches just below the knee for maximum warmth
  • Thermolite Ecomade fibers retain your body heat
  • Extra thick for extreme cold
  • Separated toes for blister prevention

Perfect for: Winter sports, extreme cold and anyone looking for the warmest Injinji toe sock. Note, this is not a specific ski sock so it has no padding on the shins.

Which Injinji sock suits you?

For extreme cold and winter sports:

  • Injinji Snow (moving)
  • Injinji Liner + Hiker (standing still)

For hiking and trekking:

  • Injinji Outdoor Midweight Crew (long hikes)
  • Injinji Outdoor Midweight Mini-Crew (shorter hikes)

For running and trail running:

  • Injinji Ultra Run Crew (long distances with compression)
  • Injinji Trail Midweight Crew or Mini-Crew (trail running)
  • Injinji Run Lightweight No-Show NuWool (intensive runs, less cold)

As a smart base layer:

  • Injinji Liner Crew (under a second sock)

Why toe socks in winter?

Many people think that toe socks are only for summer, but nothing could be further from the truth. Especially in winter, Injinji toe socks offer unique advantages:

  • No blisters - Even in winter, friction between the toes can cause blisters, especially during long hikes
  • Better moisture regulation - Moisture between the toes is wicked away, your feet stay drier and warmer
  • Perfect for barefoot shoes - The wide toe box of barefoot shoes combines perfectly with toe socks
  • Merino wool - Many winter models contain merino wool for natural warmth and odor control
