Maintenance of your new barefoot shoes

Did you just bought new shoes? Remember that every shoe needs maintenance, even a waterproof shoe.

Waterproofing consists of two layers: the outer water-repellent layer and the inner waterproof membrane.

Water-repellent outer layer:

This is the first protective layer of your shoe. This layer will not only stop water but also dirt. The less water and dirt that penetrates deep into your shoe, the less the waterproof membrane has to work. It is therefore important that you reapply this water repellent outer layer from time to time.

Waterproof membrane (Goretex, Sympatex,...)

A waterproof membrane contains miniscule pores. These pores are so small that water cannot pass through them, but water vapor can (important for the breathability of your shoes!) BUT: these pores can also get dirty! This can be caused by dirt entering your shoe from the outside (which is why it is important to maintain the outer water- and dirt-repellent layer!) but also by the salt in your sweat. The breathable membrane will transport your sweat to the outside, but the salt crystals remain in your membrane.

Therefore it is important to fill your waterproof shoes at least 1x per year with warm water and liquid soap (for example Hey Sport Tex Wash). Let this soak overnight, pour away the water, fill your shoes with old newspapers and let them dry completely. This way you clean the waterproof membrane on the inside and your shoes will last much longer!
